Eureka!

Look what I learned today!  All of these photos are SOOC (straight out of the camera), except this one above that I just cropped into a square for fun.  No adjustments to color, contrast, exposure, sharpness- no nothin’.  I took these photos today in bright, direct sunlight.  Can you believe it?  The background isn’t lit up!  There are other flowers, grass, pavement, bushes, sky, sunlight (!) hiding in all of these images.  Blows my mind that I made them all disappear in my camera- no photoshop.

I’ve been taking a photography class and this was our last challenge: create mood where there isn’t any.  My instructor’s message is that it’s not about the gear or the software, but about having a vision and conveying a feeling.

“It’s just a box with a hole in it.”

He requires us to use only manual control and no post-processing.  The goal is to become an artist rather than a photographer.

“There are enough average photos in the world.”

It takes a while to get a shot like this because I have to create an image that doesn’t exist using only the dials on my camera.

“Everything you see is a lie.  Go beneath what’s in front of you and create something new.”

Quite a challenge!  But I did it- look no sun!  And I’m so excited to learn more, especially this:

“If you don’t have a vision, if you don’t feel anything, you can’t create it.  If you don’t shoot it to begin with you can’t fix it later.”
